Cadillac is a division of General Motors (GM) that markets luxury vehicles worldwide. By the time GM purchased the company in 1909, Cadillac had already established itself as one of America's premier luxury carmakers. The American gangster, Al Capone, who made his fortune through the 1920s laws of Prohibition, commissioned this armored Cadillac. While a few years away from the V-16 monsters of the 1930s, Al Capones 1928 Cadillac was at the forefront of American luxury. This is among the earliest surviving bullet-proof vehicles, fitted with glass almost an inch thick and other reinforcements as well as lined with nearly 3,000 pounds of armor plating. The U.S. Treasury Department impounded and kept the car after Capone was arrested in 1931. When Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) went to Congress to ask for a declaration of a state of war on December 8, 1941, he rode in this Cadillac.
